  -----------'MV Clearton'---------------

Clearton was torpedoed and damaged by U-102 about 180 miles W of Ushant on July 1, 1940 at 11.55 hours and became a straggler. Two hours later, she was again torpedoed and sunk in position 47.53N, 09.30W. The master (John Edward Elsdon), 24 crew members and one gunner were picked up by the HMS Vansittart, which had just sunk the U-boat, and were landed in Plymouth. Eight crew members lost their lives and are commemorated at Tower Hill, Panel 31.
